2024 IHF Men's Club World Championship: Egypt Set to Host Renowned Handball Event

The 2024 IHF Men’s Club World Championship, also known as the IHF Men’s Super Globe, is set to take place in Egypt from September 27 to October 3, 2024. This prestigious handball competition has undergone a rebranding, cementing its position as the top club handball competition globally. The event will be hosted at the New Administrative Capital Hall in Egypt, a venue that has previously hosted major events, including the 2021 IHF Men’s World Championship.

 Teams and Format

Nine teams have qualified for this year’s championship, making it a highly anticipated event. The participating teams include:

  • SC Magdeburg (Germany): The reigning champions, having won the last three editions in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
  • Al-Ahly (Egypt): The host team, which has a significant following in Egypt.
  • FC Barcelona (Spain): The most decorated team in the competition’s history with five gold medals, returning for their seventh consecutive appearance.
  • Zamalek (Egypt): The African representative, qualifying by finishing second in the 2024 African Handball Super Cup.
  • Khaleej Club (Saudi Arabia): Representing Asia after a thrilling victory in the 2024 Asian Club League Championship.
  • Handebol Taubaté (Brazil): The South and Central American representative, returning after a one-year hiatus.
  • California Eagles (USA): Making their debut in the competition after a dramatic win in the 2024 NACHC Qualifier.
  • Sydney Uni (Australia): Returning after securing the title in the Australian Club Championships and Oceania Qualifier.
  • Veszprém HC (Hungary): Awarded a wild card, marking their return to the competition for the first time since 2015.

The competition will begin with a preliminary round where the teams are divided into three groups of three. The top team from each group, along with the best second-placed team, will advance to the semi-finals, while the remaining teams will play in placement matches.

Significance and Anticipation

This year’s championship is particularly notable as it marks the return of the competition to Egypt, a country with a strong handball tradition, for the first time since 2007. The rebranding of the event underscores its growing significance in the world of handball, with fans eagerly anticipating high-stakes matches featuring some of the best clubs globally.

The draw for the group stage will take place on August 21, 2024, in New Alamein City, Egypt. The seeding for the draw ensures that no teams from the same continent will be placed in the same group, adding to the excitement and unpredictability of the tournament.
